Spaaaaaaaah Day!

Over the holidays we celebrated my mom’s birthday by going out for a facial and lunch.  There are many spas in and around the Calgary and if I were a visitor to the area I would head to the Bodhi Tree in Canmore or the Willow Stream in Banff for that rocky mountain spa experience, but that isn’t the experience I was looking for. We wanted a quick drive downtown with ample parking and a time to spend relaxing so our choice was Newbury Spa. Newbury is slightly out of downtown so there is a parking lot a couple blocks which is actually affordable, you see Calgary has some of the highest parking rates in North America so a few hours parking downtown can end up costing about 30$ during the busy weekdays prime time hours.  What I love about Newbury is that that atmosphere is warm, welcoming, quiet and professional. It is not pretentious, I have never felt out of place nor is it over the top, plus you get a great spa feel with all the spa services and not “take out a second mortgage” spa price.  Our facials were fantastic and we felt like a million dollars, after a lounge on the day chaise in the waiting area and a cup of tea we were ready to have a gastric senses illuminated.

It is a short walk over to 17th Ave where you will find Farm, a true culinary experience. Farm works will local producers, uses real food which you can watch being prepared in an open kitchen. I would definitely recommend reservations as the restaurant has limited seating and with its great location on 17th it sees a lot of foot traffic. When you call ask to sit at the counter and that way you can see your meal prepared before your very eyes, it is sort of like watching Food Network! We could hardly hang on to a conversation because we were so mesmerized by the action in the kitchen, it was wonderful to see our meal coming together with fresh produce and caring hands.  In the back you will find Janice Beaton’s Cheese shop were you will find cheese’s on the menu and from around the world. there you have it, a day in Calgary that will leave you feeling beautiful inside and out!
